Product information

This medicine contains the active substance minoxidil which belongs to the group of anti-alopecias (medicines that stimulate hair growth). It is used in the treatment of hereditary hair loss by preventing the further hair loss and stimulating its regrowth. Minoxidil is thought to enhance blood flow to the cells from which the hair grows by widening blood vessels and opening potassium channels. This medicine is suitable for younger patients and those who started losing hair recently, or those who have smaller area of hair loss.

Is Minoxidil suitable for me?

Minoxidil is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you are allergic to minoxidil or any of the excipients of the medicine;
  • if you are pregnant or breastfeeding;
  • if you are under 18 or over 65 years old;
  • if you are not sure you have hereditary hair loss;
  • If your hair loss is caused by administration of medicines;
  • If you are completely bald, or if you have a total loss of hair on the entire body;
  • If the cause of your hair loss is unknown or if the hair loss is sudden and unexpected;
  • if you have high blood pressure (treated or untreated);
  • if you have a skin disease on the surface of the head (including sunburn and psoriasis);
  • if you have a shaved head;
  • if you are simultaneously applying creams, ointments or lotions for the treatment of diseases on surface of the head, such as dithranol, tretinoin, corticosteroids (hydrocortisone, betamethasone dipropionate), Vaseline;
  • if you wear occlusive bandage;

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breast-feeding
  • are not sure whether your scalp is normal and healthy
  • suffer from heart disease, including heart rhythm or heart rate disorder, angina or chest pain, or disorders of circulation
  • are t any taking other medicines including certain medications for blood pressure regulation known as "vasodilators" for example, hydralazine

Minoxidil interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Minoxidil?

This medicine is available in form of cutaneous spray, solution.

You should take minoxidil exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Only apply on the surface of the head.
  • The usual dose is 1 ml of solution, applied in the morning and in the evening. The daily dose should not exceed 2 ml.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not apply two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Minoxidil side effects?

Like all medicines minoxidil can cause side effects, including:

Uncommon:

  • itching or skin rash (continued)

Rare:

  • acne at site of application
  • burning of scalp
  • facial hair growth
  • increased hair loss
  • inflammation or soreness at root of hair
  • reddened skin
  • swelling of face
