Product information

The active substance in this cream is aciclovir. Aciclovir belongs to a group of medicines called antivirals and it is effective in treating infections caused by the herpes simplex virus, such as initial and recurrent genital herpes and cold sores. Aciclovir accelerates the healing process, and the treatment of the infection should be initiated as soon as possible after its appearance, ideally during the prodromal period or when lesions first appear.

Is Aciclovir suitable for me?

Aciclovir is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to aciclovir, valaciclovir, propylene glycol or any of the other ingredients contained in this cream.
  • If your immune system does not work properly due to bone marrow transplant, HIV or AIDS
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless advised to do so by your doctor

Aciclovir is not for use in the eyes, inside the mouth or genitals.

Aciclovir interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Aciclovir?

This medicine is available in form of cream.

You should use aciclovir as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Read the information leaflet provided with your medication for additional information.

  • The treatment should be started as soon as possible. Before applying the cream always wash your hands to prevent spreading the infection.
  • Aciclovir is usually applied 4 or 5 times a day, for about 5 days.
  • If your cold sore or genital herpes has not healed after five days of treatment you can continue using the cream for another five days.

If you forget to use it, apply the cream as soon as you remember, but do not use a double application to make up for a forgotten application. Talk to your doctor if you have any additional questions.

What are Aciclovir side effects?

Like all medicines aciclovir can cause side effects, including:

  • a burning or stinging feeling after applying the cream
  • mild drying or flaking of your skin
  • itching.
  • redness of your skin
  • skin rash.
