Backache is one of the most common diseases today, right away after the common cold, which can be defined as pain in the bones and muscles, usually in the lumbar region of the back, which is especially strong when bending down, getting up, lifting the load and during other physical efforts.
The pain commonly occurs in people between 20 and 40 years, but it is more intense in older patients.
Musculoskeletal pain is difficult to localize, or designate one painful area. It gradually increases after resting or sitting. It is often accompanied by stiffness and back spasms and limitation of the movement. The muscles and joints of the lower back can be very painful. The pain can be severe or moderate and temporary, it appears gradually or suddenly and, unfortunately, it is often repeated.
It can take weeks, months or even years. It may be conservative (medicines) or surgical in acute and chronic stage of the disease, which is focused on suppressing pain, eliminating the causes and prevention of recurrence of the disease.
When it comes to medicines, often are used analgesics, non-steroidal antirheumatic drugs and corticosteroids.
Physical therapy leads to improvements in the chronic phase. Heat relaxes muscle tension and relieves almost every muscle pain. Massage also refreshes the metabolism by acting against pain and reducing spasm. It is known that radiant heat increases the skin blood flow.
If the available forms of non-operative treatment cannot achieve a reduction of pain and improvement of the patient's condition, the neurosurgeon shall decide on the necessity and possibilities of surgical treatment.
